Are You Protecting Your Eyes? || Pixel Eyewear Review

The importance of taking care of your eyes + how Pixel Eyewear helps me do so everyday!

I think we can all agree on the fact that technology is advancing fast. In just the last decade, the world has been introduced to online movie streaming, social media platforms (hello Instagram!), and of course new and improved versions of various smartphone and computer brands.

While these technological advances are incredibly helpful in our fast-growing modern world, there’s one down side to most of these new products: SCREEN TIME. In fact, the average American spends a whopping 11 hours behind a screen, according to CNN Health! Crazy, right?

Why is this a problem, may you ask? Well, it’s as simple as the fact that our eyes are not designed to be exposed to constant emissions of blue light!

What is Blue Light?

In order to get a better understanding of blue light and its dangers, it’s important to define what blue light actually is first.

Blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum that can be seen by human eyes. It has a short wavelength, which means it produces higher amounts of energy than other types of visible light. Because natural blue light is emitted by the sun, blue light is present all around us.

Before you get all afraid and lock yourself in your house out of fear of being exposed to blue light, wait a minute! Being exposed to natural blue light from the sun in normal amounts is actually healthy. Natural blue light helps to regulate the body’s sleep and wake cycles, also known as your circadian rhythm. It also helps to boost your alertness, elevate your moods, heighten your reaction times and increase your overall feeling of wellbeing.

When does blue light become dangerous?

In this modern day and age, it is almost impossible to avoid screens such as computers, televisions, and smartphones. Especially if you run and instagram or a blog like me, you’re gonna be spending quite a bite of your time staring at a screen!

The light that comes from your screens is blue light, which has a high frequency and short wavelengths. The human eye is not capable of effectively blocking blue light, meaning that virtually all visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens and reaches the retina. While small amounts of blue light are perfectly fine, research has shown that prolonged exposure to blue light can damage the retina, the part of the eye that detects certain qualities such as color and light intensity. Excessive retina damage causes changes that resemble macular degeneration, which can lead to permanent vision loss.

Signs of excessive exposure to blue light

Before you worry that you have permanent retina damage, let me reassure that there is lots you can do to prevent it! If you spend lots of time behind a screen, chances are you’ve experienced (or are currently experiencing) symptoms of digital eye strain. Some examples are:

  • eye fatigue

  • dry eyes

  • blurred vision

  • headaches

  • trouble sleeping

The last bullet actually has to do with your circadian rhythm. Does that ring a bell? Like I said earlier in this post, your circadian rhythm is your body’s sleep and wake cycle. If you spend time looking at a screen just before bedtime, you may realize you have trouble sleeping. This is because blue light suppresses the production of melatonin, a natural sleep hormone.

If you’ve ever experienced a period of sleeping badly, you know it’s no fun!

My experience

Between photo editing, blogging, instagram, and school, I spend a lot of time looking at screens. In the past couple months, I started to experience symptoms of digital eye strain. At the end of my working days, my eyes would hurt like crazy, things would get blurry, and I was sleeping horribly! This is when I realized I needed to start taking better care of my eye health.

That’s when I came across Pixel Eyewear.

Pixel Eyewear…

is a company based in sunny Los Angeles that creates and designs fashionable computer eyewear with lenses that filter out blue light, increase magnification, and eliminates glare to prevent eye strain and headaches. Their computer glasses were initially created to solve the founders of Pixel Eyewear’s own eye strain problems from sitting in front of screens for too long. They quickly realized that others may experience similar problems and could benefit from wearing their blue light glasses as well! Pixel Eyewear’s goal is to create computer glasses that are not only functional but fashionable and hip as well!

I always love it when people create something amazing and then make it their work. You guys know I’m all about following your passion and chasing your dreams, so Pixel Eyewear’s story definitely spoke to me :)

Anyways, back to the glasses!

When I came across Pixel Eyewear’s website, I was immediately obsessed with all of their awesome frames and designs. It was hard for me to choose one (they’re all super cute!) but ended up going with the Whiskey Tortoise Capra model.

When I received my glasses, I was so happy with how well they fit, and how comfortable they are too! Plus, they’re super stylish; I wear them everywhere now! After just one day of wearing the blue-light blocking glasses, the results were truly incredible. My eyes did NOT hurt, I could see clearly, and my SLEEP. Not only could I fall asleep WAY quicker than in the past couple months, but I also STAYED asleep throughout the night.

I have now been wearing my Pixel Eyewear glasses everyday for the past couple weeks, and I swear I’m never going to work behind a screen without them anymore! Like I said, the results I experienced after wearing the glasses after just ONE DAY were incredible!

Being someone who is obsessed with writing and sharing about all things health and wellness, it feels so good knowing I can write and share WHILE protecting the health and wellness of my eyes. Eyes may be small, but you know what they say: good things come in small packages🎁So you better make sure you’re taking care of those gems—you’ll never get another pair!
